Folinic acid (injection)

What does it do?

Folinic acid is used to reduce some of the side effects of methotrexate. It is also sometimes used for other conditions.

Before you start

  • Tell your doctor if you have blood problems, vitamin B12 deficiency or have ever had a seizure.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

How is it given?

Folinic acid is given as an infusion into a vein or an injection into a muscle .

What if you forget a dose?

Folinic acid will be given to you by a health professional. If you are unable to attend an appointment, contact your health professional as soon as possible.

Can you take other medicines?

Tell your pharmacist or doctor about all medicines or treatments that you may be taking, including vitamins, herbal products or recreational drugs.

What side effects might you notice?

Symptoms of allergy including: skin rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing

Tell your doctor immediately

If you notice any other effects, discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.

Other information:

  • Folinic acid is different to folic acid. You should not take folic acid if prescribed folinic acid by your doctor.
  • This medicine is also known as calcium folinate.
